The Homme charter of 847 refers to a number of roads, including a way which ran down to Kingsbridge estuary from Halwell, and a further road, referred to in as a 'herepath', which also seems to have led to the estuary. Several fords are mentioned which are indicative of other routes, especially near Kingsbridge where there is an important crossing point of the estuary.
