PYE ET AL, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV7766.

1989 watching brief by emafu on corridor of gas pipeline located a medieval field system at combefishacre. Consists of a series of lynchets located off the pipeline on the n slopes of a small valley. They survive in 2 fields of rough pasture (os 5399/5605 and 6218), the boundary between which utilises 2 of them. There are also earthworks of a rectangular sloping enclosure or field visible immediately to the n (pye et al).

A number of the earthworks correspond with linear features in this location.

Linear and curvilinear earthwork banks are visible.

Linear and curvilinear earthwork banks are visible.

Parallel linear and curvilinear earthwork banks, between 5-23m wide, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Combefishacre, Ipplepen. The earthworks broadly follow the contours of a prominent ridge which slopes steeply to the southeast, southwest and northwest. They are in keeping with the historic field patterns depicted in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields and a number of the earthworks correspond with field boundaries shown on this map. Their character and topographic setting supports the interpretation that they represent the remains of medieval lynchets which define a series of narrow and rectilinear shaped terraces and which have partly been incorporated into the historic field system.
