Full description

Baring Gould, S., 1894, 1st Report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee: The Exploration of Grimspound, 101/121 (Article in Serial). SDV304196.

Hut 12 has a doorway threshold stone and has a perfect dais to the right of the entrance, with hearthstone at the foot and cooking hole on the left of the hearth. Some burnt cooking stones were found, and a small water-worn river pebble. There is a shelter wall to the west of the entrance.

Pattison, P., 1991, A Survey of Grimspound, Manaton Parish, Devon, 6 (Report - Survey). SDV304224.

Hut 12 is sub-circular and measures 2.55 meters in diameter; with walls 0.6 meters high, consisting of an internal ring of un-coursed stones, with three edge-set facing stones visible, two of which are also door jambs. A further facing stone on the western side has collapsed inwards. Behind the internal ring is a bank of earth and stone. The southern entrance has been disturbed by a recent hole. There is a badly damaged shelter wall marked only by a few stones, now displaced, leading south from the west side of the entrance. None of the internal features noted in 1894 are visible. There is a modern track causing erosion to north-east wall.

Gerrard, S., 1995, 140322 (Site Visit). SDV321021.

Hut circle terraced into the hill slope and of the straight porch plan and single orthostat walling type. The interior of the circle measures 2.55 meters in diameter and is defined by a 1.4 meter wide wall standing up to 0.6 meters high. Footpath crosses the northern wall of this building. Excavated by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee in 1894. This work revealed a well preserved bench, a cooking hole, some burnt round stones and a river pebble, together with a south south-west facing doorway and a straight porch.
