Irregularly shaped pits are visible on aerial photographs of 1951 as earthworks up to circa 33m across cut into the north-east facing slope west of Bowringsleigh.
The easternmost pit probably corresponds with a quarry depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map. The irregularly shaped hollows and mounds to the east were possibly later workings along the depicted access track.
The quarry is not depicted on the Tithe Map for West Alvington, the plot in which it is located listed in the Apportionments as Plot 854, Part of Cockwood Plantation. This might support the interpretation that the quarry originated in the mid-19th century.
It might be associated with a smaller pit to the west.
The pits are obscured from view by the dense tree cover of Bowringsleigh Wood on images derived from aerial photographs of 2015 but might survive as an earthwork.
