Quarries of probable post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 on the north-west-facing slopes of the spur south of Stoliford, Modbury.
An overgrown pit circa 45m across, centred on circa SX66685056 corresponds with an area marked on the Tithe Map for Modbury and a quarry depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map. The pit therefore predates circa 1840 and could be early 19th century in date. A smaller hollow circa 30m across, visible approximately 20m downslope, is probably the remains of an earlier quarry or extractive pit.
The larger pit has since been filled and near levelled but both pits remain identifiable as subtle earthwork hollows on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
