HER Number:MDV48101
Name:Fields defined by cairns and lynchet south-west of Raddick Hill, Walkhampton

Summary

Two fields surrounded by cairns, a lynchet and a boundary bank. West field measures 68 metres east-west and 84 metres north-south; defined by six cairns on north and west sides, rubble bank on south and lynchet on east. East field measures 35 metres east-west and 28 metres north-south and is defined by three cairns and the lynchet.
Area may have been cleared of stone into waste dumps, then plots abandoned before a formal linking boundary wall was constructed. It is probable, however, that the boundaries were built but now covered by peat accumulation except where they survive as a lynchet and short length of rubble walling.

This monument includes twelve cairns, a lynchet, a boundary bank and two field-plots forming part of a cairnfield on a gentle south-west facing slope of Raddick Hill overlooking the valley of the River Meavy. The mounds are scattered around the edge of two small fields, which are defined largely by the location of the mounds. A lynchet measuring 42 metres long, 2 metre wide and standing up to 0.4 metres high divides the smaller eastern field from the more substantial western one. The eastern field measures 28 metres north to south by 35 metres east to west and the western field measures 84 metres north to south by 68 metres east to west. A length of rubble bank measuring 1.5 metres wide and 0.4 metres high, lying on the southern edge of the monument is a land division boundary, though it is not necessarily contemporary with the cairnfield. Nine of the mounds are sub-circular in shape and these range in size from 3 metres to 6.3 metres in diameter and stand between 0.3 metres and 0.8 metres high. The remainder are ovoid in shape, and these range between 4 metres and 8.5 metres long to 2.3 metres to 6 metres wide and stand between 0.4 metres and 0.9 metres high. Three cairns have a shallow hollow cut into the body of the mound, suggesting robbing or partial excavation. Some of the mounds are probably associated with funerary remains, but the majority most likely represent stone clearance connected with cultivation of the area.
