The remains of probable post-medieval to 20th century ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as low, parallel earthwork banks on the south-east facing slopes to the north of Wakley’s Cottage, Cotleigh.
The banks extended over a small area of approximately 1000 square metres and were spaced up approximately 5 metres apart. They were aligned obliquely to the contours, presumably to aid drainage towards a stream to the east.
The plot in which the banks were visible, plot 368, was named on the Tithe Apportionment for Cotleigh as an orchard, associated with the farmstead or property known as Bowood, and the earthworks are therefore interpreted as ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage.
Although shown as containing trees, the plot is not symbolised as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch first edition map, and might have passed out of use between circa 1840 and 1880. The cottages immediately to the north, with which the orchard was probably associated, have also been removed by this time, supporting the interpretation of a change of use. The earthworks are therefore at the latest mid-19th century in date.
The banks cannot be seen as earthworks on more recent images available to the survey and have probably been levelled.
