HER Number:MDV49629
Name:Tolcis Lime Works, Axminster Parish

Summary

A stepped quarry pit, spoil heap, raised trackway and several buildings are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947, covering a larger area than 'Tolcis Lime Works' depicted on the late-19th century mapping. It seems to have become disused between 1969 and 1982 and subsequently partly landscaped, so the earthworks visible on images derived from lidar data flown between 1998 and 2014 are not a true reflection of its extent.

A stepped quarry pit, spoil heap, raised trackway and several buildings are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947, covering 550 to 265 metres. A smaller area of active and disused quarries, kilns and trackways are depicted and marked as part of 'Tolcis Lime Works' on the late-19th century mapping. The quarry appears to have been deepened by 1969 although vegetation had colonised the spoil heaps. By 1982 the spoil heap and buildings are no longer visible, and the pit does not appear to be active, and by 1996 part of the site appears to have been landscaped, so the earthworks visible on images derived from lidar data flown between 1998 and 2014 are not a true reflection of the former extent of the workings. Previously recorded as a point at ST 2790 0095.
