A shallow irregularly shaped pit up to circa 20m across and 90m long is visible as an earthwork on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
The visible earthworks correspond in part with an ‘Old Gravel Pit’ depicted on the OS 1880s First Edition 25inch map. The visible earthworks are however significantly larger than those depicted on the historic map. This might support the interpretation that the pit depicted on the first edition map had passed out of use by circa 1880 and was evidence of only the most recent phase of extraction, and that extractive activity was more extensive than indicated by the documentary evidence.
