HER Number:MDV51215
Name:Group of clearance cairns, taw Marsh

Summary

The remains of four small turf-covered clearance cairns, located on a gentle north west facing slope overlooking Taw Marsh. The cairn at SX 62179033 measures 2.5 metres north to south by 2.7 metres and stands a maximum height of 0.5 metres. At SX 6216 9034 the gently domed cairn measures 4 metres north to south by 4.3 metres and up to 0.6 metres in height. The cairn at SX 6215 9034 measures 3 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres high whilst the fourth cairn at SX 6216 9035 measures 3.3 metres north to south by 2.4 metres and stands up to 0.4 metres high. These cairns are possibly stone clearance cairns related to a pair of hut circles 60m to the S or, more likely to the medieval or later boundary cairns immediately to the N. Scheduled as prehistoric features. Gerrard (1998) records 13 cairns forming part of a cairnfield in this area.

Full description

Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 149275 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.

(29/01/1998) A cluster of 13 cairns forming part of a cairnfield 380m SW of a ford on the Small Brook.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1993-1998, Dartmoor Royal Forest Project, S. Probert (Report - Survey). SDV346608.

(02/08/1993) Centred SX 6216 9034. Four small turf-covered cairns, located on the gently sloping ground at the north west foot of Metheral Hill above Taw Marsh:
SX 6217 9033. Possessing an irregular top this feature measures 2.5m north to south by 2.7m and stands a maximum height of 0.5m high.
SX 6216 9034. A gently domed cairn 4.0m north to south by 4.3m and 0.6m high.
SX 6215 9034. 3.0m in diameter and 0.5m high with a gently domed top.
SX 6216 9035. A rectangular cairn 3.3m north to south by 2.4m and 0.4m high. These cairns are probably stone clearance rather than sepulchral in origin and may be associated with the two hut circles (SX 69 SW 41 and 42) some 60m to the S or, more likely, the medieval or later boundary cairns immediately to the N. The latter lie on the boundary of Dartmoor Forest and South Tawton parishes.

Probert, S. A. J. + Newman, P., 2003-2004, Measured survey North Dartmoor Military Range Okehampton Range: Monument Baseline Condition Survey, S. Probert (Report - Survey). SDV350801.

(23/10/2003) These features remain as described in 1993 though they are becoming obscured by recent heather growth.
