HER Number:MDV53375
Name:Hut within enclosure at Tory Brookhead to the north of Cholwichtown Clay Works, Shaugh Prior

Summary

Hut located close to the centre of the enclosure. Measures 6.6 metres north-south by 7.5 metres internally with traces of internal facing and a possible entrance in the south-western side. Butler records it is the largest building in the settlement, from which walls radiate to boundary walls of the enclosure. Appears to have been the most important hut at one time. A number of auxiliary structures may be associated with this hut, so could be associated with the Medieval farmstead to the south.

(18/05/1993) SX 5862 6335 Hut A. Simple plan and single orthostat walling type. Interior measures 7m in diameter and is defined by a 1.5m wide wall standing up to 0.7m high. A south-south-west facing gap in the surrounding wall may represent an original doorway.
A later structure built into the southern part of the hut's interior is oval in shape, 4.5m by 2.1m and is defined by a 1.2m wide rubble wall standing up to 0.5m high. This more recent structure may have been associated with the nearby medieval farmstead (see SX56SE/343; MDV28563).
Two oval shaped structures attached to the south-east side of this hut circle may either be huts or further features associated with Medieval activity.

Hut Circle '3' is the largest building in the settlement within Enclosure 'B' at 'Tory Brookhead enclosures' of 7.0 metres diameter set centrally and from which walls radiate to the boundary walls of the enclosure. It appears to have been the most important hut at one time. It was entered via steps up from the south through a doorway 1.0 metres wide with its posts still in place. One of the radial walls connects it to Hut Circle '4' against the western boundary. There is an internal division in the eastern part of the hut.

(SX 5862 6336) A curvilinear bank up to circa 2.5m wide is visible as an earthwork under vegetation on aerial photographs of 1946, as a stony earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2002 and is identifiable as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
The bank defines a small oval enclosure up to 8m across, roughly central within the surrounding enclosure MDV2425.
The visible earthwork is interpreted as a hut circle of probable Bronze Age to Iron Age date. It is one of 8 associated with the surrounding enclosure. Further linear banks abut the possible hut circles to the east and south, possibly evidence of sub-division or annexes within the wider enclosure.
The hut circle has been transcribed as part of enclosure MDV2425.

Richards, A. F., 2020, Cholwich Town settlement MDV2425 records confusion (Personal Comment). SDV150716.

(18/05/2020) Due to confusion over unclean HER records, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey project (2019-20), has ascribed information onto incorrect records; see notes field. Record locations have been updated and correct source information added but some of the HER records referred to by the project will be inaccurate.
