HER Number:MDV53387
Name:Structure in enclosure north of Tory Brook Head, Shaugh Prior

Summary

One of five hut circles recorded by Gerrard (1993) within the western enclosure on the south-west facing slopes of Lee Moor, north of Cholwichtown Clay Works. Ground survey in 2002 cast doubt on this identification; thought to be contemporary or later activity on the site, subdividing the enclosure, rather than huts. The feature is clearly visible as a stony bank on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2002 and is identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.

Summary from record MDV2431:
Hut circle X measures 7.5 metres in diameter, 0.5 metres high. Attached to the enclosure A at the south-east corner. The walling consists of small turf covered stones reaching an average height of 0.5 metres. The entrance is not obvious. SX58506335

SX 5849 6337 Gerrard's Hut D. Conjoined plan with porch, double orthostat and rubble bank walling type. Interior measures 4 metres in diameter and is defined by a 2 metre wide wall standing up to 0.4 metres high. A gap in the east-facing wall may represent an original doorway. A curved length of rubble bank leading away from the eastern side of the hut represents a hooked porch. This hut is attached to the inner face of the enclosure and Hut C.

A curvilinear bank up to circa 2m wide is visible as a stony earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2002 and is identifiable as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
The bank defines an oval enclosure up to circa 7m across, abutting or partly defining the interior of the boundary bank of the enclosure MDV53383.
The visible earthwork is interpreted as a hut circle of probable Bronze Age to Iron Age date, one of 5 identified within the enclosure. It is abutted to the north by the possible hut circle MDV53386 and to the south by the possible hut circle MDV53388.
The hut circle has been transcribed as part of enclosure MDV53383.
