Full description

Exeter Archaeology, 1995, Archaeological Evaluation at Silver Street Ipplepen for GCP Ltd. Part 1 Excavation Summary (Report - Evaluation). SDV344657.

Evaluation by exeter archaeology in 1995 revealed, at the n end of trench 2, the end walls of a building. Walls 0.7m wide on e side and 0.5m wide on w, constructed of limestone blocks bonded with mud. Overlain by 0.2m of demolition material. External dimension 4.3m e-w. Length unknown, since it continued s beyond the limit of excavation. Within the building an internal surface was recorded at a depth of 0.7m. Pottery from this layer dates to 1200-1500 ad. A granite threshold, worn smooth through usage, was also exposed as part of this layer. This occupation layer sealed the upper fills of 2 pits. These were not fully excavated, but their upper fills produced medieval pottery (1200- 1500) and residual roman pottery, probably from 3c-4c. Diams of pits not determined due to limited size of excavations. E wall of building was robbed out at 2m s of the corner, but construction cut preserved alignment further. Some 6m s of corner the wall reappeared for 2m, built into a hollow in bedrock. To e of this wall was an area of burning which yielded medieval pottery.

Summary of the evaluation and watching brief at Silver Street, Ipplepen by S. J. Reed, carried out in advance of the construction of a new medical centre on a site immediately south of St Andrew's Church.
The site lies between the churchyard on the north-west and Silver Street on the south-east. Two medieval buildings were partially uncovered which lay 8.0 metres apart at right angles to the street. The second building, 15 metres long by 4.25 metres wide, was situated 23 metres south-east of the church.
