Full description

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1987-1993, Duchy Farms Project Survey Visit, P. Pattison (Report - Survey). SDV350839.

(11/11/1988) A concentration of medium-sized stones forming a rough rectangular platform on sloping ground within Brimpts Newtake near the head of Coxlakes at SX 6539 7475. It measures 16m long x 8m wide x 0.5m high and is partly covered by vegetation but the piled, jumbled nature of the stones is clear. The "surface" of the platform is irregular and pitted possibly due to stone robbing. Its NE end lies against the Brimpts Mine Leat (SX 67 SE 134) but it is not clear whether it is cut by the leat or built against it. The purpose of this structure is uncertain. Though the stones show no recognisable arrangement the overall shape is regular and deliberate; it is possibly a ruined and robbed building. Alternatively it could be a pillow mound.

Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 157114 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.

(10/05/2002) at sx65397470. Cairn within a prehistoric field system 800 metres north of Huccaby Tor. An area of disturbed ground with a few stones scattered around may be the remnants of a cairn.

Butler, J., 1991, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Two - The North, 57,239. Map 28, Site 6 (Monograph). SDV219155.

Cock's Lake cairn at SX65407476 of 7.2 metres diameter by 0.4 metres high. A stony mound on the edge of the leat 150 metres north of the 'Cock's Lake enclosure' is probably a prehistoric cairn. It has been dug into and the stones scattered outwards from a central pit but there is no sign of a cist. Possibly this is the ruined cairn that Burnard 'examined in Brimpts newtake but without result'.
