Name:Possible mortar stance on Assycombe Hill

Summary

Shallow depression approximately 4.8m across, up to 0.5m deep and has a crude stoney rim 0.5m wide and 0.5m high. Its origin and function are not clear. It may be of military origin, perhaps as a mortar stance, however, associated rectangular pits are not apparent. Alternatively it may be caused by the extraction of surface moor stone.

(06/11/1992) SX66478189. An amorphous shallow depression lies in open heather-covered moorland on the SW flank of Assycombe Hill. It is approximately 4.8m across, up to 0.5m deep and has a crude stoney rim 0.5m wide and 0.5m high.
Its origin and function are not clear. It may be of military origin, perhaps as a mortar stance, however, associated rectangular pits are not apparent. Alternatively it may be caused by the extraction of surface moor stone.
