Name:Tinner's pit on Broad Down

Summary

Earthwork remains of medieval or later tinner's pits situated on the south facing slopes of Broad Down. An archaeological field survey in 1989 recorded area measuring approximately 40 metres north-south by 20 metres containing six or seven irregular and roughly circular turf covered pits ranging from 2 metres to 7 metres in diameter and 1metre to 1.5 metres deep. Most have spoil heaps around the lower south sides.

(25/09/1989 SX 6316 8041. On the S facing slopes of Broad Down at about 470m OD is an area approximately 40m N-S by 20m with 6 or 7 irregular and roughly circular turf covered pits ranging from 2m to about 7m in diameter and 1m to 1,5m deep. Most have debris banks around their lower S sides.
Probably tin pits, which may have been mutilated by shell or mortar firing.
