A marl pit depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch remains visible as an earthwork pit up to circa 90 metres in diameter on aerial photographs of the 1940s to the 1960s. The pit has probably now been largely levelled but slight earthwork evidence of the feature can be seen on images derived from Lidar data. The earthwork appears to be respected by a field boundary to the south of the pit. The surrounding fieldscape is characterised by HLC as Barton Fields, enclosed probably between the 15th and 18th centuries, and the pit is therefore probably postmedieval in date

Dean, R., 2015, An Archaeological Gradiometer Survey: Land at Plumb Park, Exmouth, East Devon (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV358154.

A geophysical survey was undertaken by Substrata as commissioned by AC Archaeology Ltd on behalf of clients in support of a forthcoming planning application.

Anomaly group 14 represents debris and other deposits filling a former marl pit recorded on Ordnance Survey maps between 1890 and at least 1988 but not on the current map. The feature was labelled ‘Old Marl Pit’ on the maps produced between 1890 and 1906. It shows on aerial photographs as a large circular depression and was observed as a slight hollow during a field inspection. The pit is not recorded on the Littleham tithe map of 1844 but a kink in the mapped field boundary reveals its location (James 2012: 10, 16, 17).
