Name:Disused ochre works on Smeardon Down, Peter Tavy

Summary

The remains of a disused ochre works lie along the lower, western, slopes of Smeardon Down. Grass-covered platforms are visible in the north at SX 5165 7825. Also probable hoppers, loading bays and platforms survive on the side of the metalled road in the south (at SX 5169 7790). The site is served by two grass roads. A leat (see SX 57 NW 144) and a reservoir on the east side of the main access road may have been constructed for the works.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1987-1993, Duchy Farms Project Survey Visit (Report - Survey). SDV350839.

(12/07/1991) SX 5156 7811 (centre). The remains of a disused ochre works lie along the lower, western, slopes of Smeardon Down at 230m OD.
Grass-covered platforms are visible in the north at SX 5165 7825. Also probable hoppers, loading bays and platforms survive on the side of the metalled road in the south (at SX 5169 7790). The site is served by two grass roads. A leat (see SX 57 NW 144) and a reservoir on the east side of the main access road may have been constructed for the works.
