Name:Hut Circle within Enclosure (C) south-west of Shadyback Tor, Shaugh Prior

Summary

One of two hut circles of probable prehistoric date identified by field and aerial survey on the north-west facing slopes of a spur to the north-west of Trowlesworthy Warren House. The hut circles are associated with an enclosed hut circle settlement. Of the two, only this hut circle was identifiable on aerial photographs of 1946, digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2007 and visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, SX56SE21, H (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV146590.

Visited 01/06/1950 (SX 5661 6498). Hut circle H, one of a group of eight. Diameter approximately 8.0 metres. The walling has fallen and is about 3-4.0 metres wide. No visible entrance.

Site visited on 2nd April 1995. Two stone hut circles within agglomerated enclosure. These buildings survive as banks of earth and stone surrounding a circular internal area. The interior of the northern hut measures 6.5 metres in diameter and the surrounding 2 metre wide coursed wall stands up to 0.7 metres high. A west facing gap in the hut wall represents a doorway leading into an annex measuring 6.5 metres long by 4.2 metres wide defined by a 1.4 metres wide and 0.3 metres high rubble bank. The entrance into this annex faces south-east and the southern hut is also connected to the annex wall. The interior of the southern hut measures 5m in diam and is defined by a 1.4m wide single orthostat and rubble bank wall standing up to 0.5m high.

Northern hut circle within Shadyback Tor Prehistoric Enclosure 'C' has a rectangular annexe to the south-west.

Hut Circle 'b' at SX56626497 is a sub-circular structure abutting the enclosure wall. It is composed of large stones with a few outer facing orthostats and a rubble core.There is a possible entrance in the south-west sector. The hut is 6 meters in diameter internally and 9.5 metres externally with walls of 0.7 metres high.

One hut is built onto the enclosure wall, and has a west facing entrance and an attached yard, 7.0 metres by 3.5 metres.

A hut circle of probable Bronze Age to Iron Age date is visible on aerial photographs of 1964, digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2007 and visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as a roughly circular bank circa 3.5m to 4m wide defining a hollow or platform approximately 5 to 7m across.
Packed stones are identifiable within the bank material on the 2007 imagery, indicating a possible original wall or bank width of up to circa 3m.
The hut circle is the one of two recorded within the banked enclosure MDV4266. The second, MDV56782 was not is identifiable from the sources available to the survey.
A possible entrance is identifiable facing west into the enclosure.
