(16/11/1994) This irregular aggregate field system forms part of a large prehistoric hut settlement. It includes at least 4 major fields, each defined by stone + earth walls. The individual fields may be described as follows:-
Field A [SX 55727616] this field measures up to 100m by 74m, contains 3 hut circles, whilst a further hut is linked to the western wall. The northern length of field walling has a large number of large earthfast boulders incorporated into its circuit, whilst the remainder includes stones and earth forming a 1.5m wide and 0.4m high wall. Field B is attached to its eastern side, thus confirming that field A was constructed before field B. The relationship with field D is less clear, but it also appears to postdate field A.
Field B [SX 55787618] this field measures up to 70m by 62m, contains one hut circle and another is linked to the northern wall. The field is partially subdivided by a 2m wide and 1m high lynchet which leads e from the hut lying within the field. A boundary bank which butts the northern side of the field and leads to another hut may represent an unfinished boundary wall. This boundary wall is latter in date than field B. Field B is more recent than field A, but is probably earlier than field D.
Field C [SX 55867609] this field measures up to 140m by 74m and contains at least 2 hut circles. The field wall is of rubble construction and averages 1.5m wide and 0.5m high. This field is earlier than field D, but its relationship to the others is unclear. A partition added sometime after the field was constructed bisects it into two fairly even parts.
Field D [SX 55787611] this field measures up to 145m by 95m and contains at least 5 hut circles, one of which is attached to the inner face of the field's ne boundary. This field appears to be the most recent in the developmental sequence.
