Milestone situated about 70m north of turn to Halmpstone Manor. On grass verge by telegraph pole on west side. Legend reads '5 Barum'. Worn. Chunk out of top right hand edge. At risk of neglect and vegetation overgrowth. Grid reference given as SS60011 28653. One of a set of milestones running from Barnstaple as far as Tollbar Cross, some 16 miles of road, placed in 1879 to commemorate the closure of the town's Turnpike Trust. Each of the stones bears the medieval Latin name of BARUM and are simple tombstone-shaped markers displaying a countdown of the miles away from the town.
