Summary

A circular earthwork pit is visible on aerial photographs and other remote sensing images from the 1940s onwards, to the east of Monks Wall, Otterton. A circular earthwork pit is visible on aerial photographs and other remote sensing images from 1945 onwards, to the east of Monks Wall, Otterton. The earthwork is roughly circular and approximately 35 metres in diameter. It was previously recorded as a bomb crater of Second World War date but it seems unlikely that such a pit would have been filled and returned to cultivation by mid-1945. It seems more probable the pit is the remains of a former quarry or extraction pit of post medieval to 19th century date. It does not correspond with any features depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map and probably therefore passed out of use prior to the 1880s.
