Site visited on 29th January 1999. Alluvial streamwork earthworks on Chagford Common. A group of parallel bank earthworks. This site is unusual in that the earthworks are at two very different levels. One lies in the valley bottom and the second on a terrace above. The banks average 2.5 metres wide and 0.7 metres high. These earthworks are shown on a photograph in Butler, but are not shown on the accompanying map.
Butler, J., 1991, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume Two - The North, 33, Photo on page 116 (Monograph). SDV219155.
The earliest tinning activity in the valley of the Bovey was the streaming of the river bed. Turf covered mounds of pebbles accompany the river downstream for nearly two kilometres. The photograph shows a discete area of linear streamworks.
