Name:Bridge 19 metres north of Dartmeet Bridge

Summary

Clapper bridge over the River Dart at Dartmeet. A clapper bridge comprising five drystone piers of 1.4 metres high. The original bridge was believed to be medieval in date. The bridge was partly destroyed by flooding in 1820 and rebuilt.

Crossing, W., 1912 (1965), Crossing's Guide to Dartmoor, 157 (Monograph). SDV320981.

Destroyed by flood in 1820 the bridge was partly restored about 20 years ago but some stones have since been displaced.

Remains of a clapper bridge which formerly had five spans.

(14/01/1952) Cyclopean bridge. Good condition with fine piers, but only one bridge slab remains in position.

(18/03/1980) Five drystone piers, up to 1.4. high, and one span of the clapper bridge remain. (See GP's). The original date is uncertain, but it is probably Medieval.
