Summary

Hut in reave system; one of a group of five originally recorded by the Ordnance Survey in 1950. Survey in 1977 recorded the diameter as 4.5 metres internally, walls 1.1 metres wide, 0.5 metres high. Entrance to east. Further visit in 1995 recorded the hut unchanged.

Protected Status

  • SHINE: Part of the Dartmeet parallel reave system east of Down Ridge. Earthworks and walling remains of a Bronze Age field system adjoining the Venford Reave, with numerous hut circles, enclosures, cairns and a later medieval field system

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950, SX67SE58, E (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV277634.

(27/4/1950) Group of five hut circles named A-E. Hut circle E (SX 6636 7157). A small hut; 5.0 metres diameter. Walling of large turf-covered stones. Entrance to south-east.

(Visited 18/7/1977) At SX 6635 7156 is a hut in poor condition with levelled interior and an eastern entrance. Internal diameter 4.5 metres, walls 1.1 metres thick, 0.5 metres high. Associated with parallel reave system and collection of huts to the north; a group of four hut circles. All are in poor condition, have levelled interiors and entrance on east (note: there are no individual descriptions from this visit, but these correspond to SX67SE/105, 106, 107, 108).
