A sand pit is visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 on the east-facing slopes of Hembury Hill, Awliscombe parish. The earthwork was depicted on the OS First Edition 25 inch map and was therefore not transcribed by the survey. It is possible that the sand pit was cut into the spoil of earlier whetstone mine workings immediately upslope, and is therefore probably 19th century in date.
