Name:CAIRN in the Parish of South Tawton

Summary

Vis=9/8/1957(os) remains of retaining circle on eastern perimeter, cairn mutilated in its centre and west side. Turf covered. Diam 16.5m, height 1m. Vis=18/3/1970(ancient monuments) barrow with remains of kerb stones in situ. Mound apparently made up largely of granite boulders. Diameter 17 feet, 4 feet high. Vis=21/4/1973 (grinsell) diameter 16m, height 0.8m. Cairn crowned by stone heap. Signs of retaining circle 13.5m in diameter with some slabs projecting outwards. Vis=-/-/1983 (weston) fmw visit. Vis=visible and recorded (rchm app 1985)vis=platform circle. Flat topped cairn with kerb that leans outward.14.2m diam and 1m high. Kerb stones rest on trigger stones or cairn material. Comparable to examples on bodmin moor (turner). Vis=17/1/1994 (gerrard) platform cairn on the summit ridge of cawsand or cosdon hill. Forms part of a cemetery including at least 2 round cairns, 2 ring cairns and one platform cairn. Mound measures 16.5m in diam and stands up to 1m high. A central hollow has been largely backfilled with loose rubble to form a pile of stones measuring 3m in diam and 1m high. The outer edge of the mound is faced with close set orthostats, many of which are leaning outwards away from the cairn, forming a kerb standing up to 0.7m high. A second kerb survives largely as a buried feature 1m inside the outer ring and is visible as 4 edge set stones in the w side of the mound (mpp).
