The 'Chanteloupe' was wrecked at the base of Thurlestone Rock in September 1772. Remains consist of a few cannon, musket and pistol shot. Local diver, Neville Oldham, raised one of the cannon, which can be seen on the green opposite Thurlestone Church. The 'Chanteloupe' was sailing from Grenada in the West Indies to London with a cargo of rum, sugar, coffee and Madeira wine.
Glover, F., 2005, Untitled Source (Personal Comment). SDV321319.
Some argument as to its position; either located at Bantham or at Thurlestone Rock (See PRN 18298).
