Excavations by Exeter Archaeology on the site of the new Combined School in Topsham revealed a field boundary ditch running alongside the position of a former hedge bank which contained 19th century finds. In the 19th century the site lay within two long narrow gardens to the rear of properties in Fore Street. These formed parts of a block of such properties, separated from one another by hedges wich extended from the Exeter Road down to the river cliff of the Exe. Elsewhere in the south west fields of this general form can be shown to have originated as strips within medieval open fields, subsequently enclosed by hedges in the late medieval or early modern periods. If this were the case, they would subsequently have been adopted as the property boundaries of new houses as Topsham spread onto this area in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. However, it is suggested that it is unlikely that a Civil War redoubt would have been built on a site closely hemmed in by hedges and it seems more likely, therefore, that the hedge banks were laid out after the Civil War, simply marking the divisions between later properties.
