Full description

Department of Environment, 1988, Walkhampton (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV11886.

Ward Farmhouse.
Early C17 possibly with earlier origins, extended in later C17, C18 with C19 additions. Stone rubble and cob walls, the cob rendered on the 1st floor at the front. Thatch roof gabled to the left end hipped to the right. 3 rendered stacks, the one at the left gable-end is brick on a stone base, central axial one is rubble with a brick shaft, that to the right is brick.
Plan: originally 3-room-and-through-passage plan with lower end to the left. Hall stack backs onto passage, lower room heated by gable-end fireplace as is inner room but the latter may be inserted. The house was extended by one unheated room in the later C17 or early C18 and there is an C18 outbuilding adjoining it. C19 outshut built at rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Long asymmetrical 6-window front of C20 2, 3 and 4-light casements. C20 French windows to left. C20 part-glazed door to passage towards left-hand end with thatch doorhood. C19 or early C20 leanto porch in front of right-hand end with C19 plank and part-glazed door behind, small gabled early C20 wing projecting from the end. Corrugated iron roof outbuilding extends from right-hand end.
Interior: lower and inner rooms have chamfered ceiling beams. The fireplaces all have modern grates. The roof structure may be of considerable interest but was inaccessible at time of survey. Other details: LBS 90930.
