Full description

Exeter Archaeology, 2003, East Devon Heathlands Archaeological Survey, 16, Part 1; 104, Part 2: Gazetteer, Site No. 328 (Report - Survey). SDV101648.

Within woodland is elongated quarried area circa 30 metres east/west by circa 15 metres north/south by 2 metres deep. Much loose chert type stone on surrounding surface. Short distance to north of this quarry a straight gully runs east from the west boundary. Gully has vertical sides and is 1.5 metres deep by 0.75 metre wide. In section of gully it can be seen that subsoil consists of densely packed chert stones, overlying orange sand; the gully has been excavated to the level of the top of the sand. Gully of uncertain significance, but presumably related to quarrying. To east of quarry and turning south-eastward along trackway is series of substantial gullies cut through the chert subsoil. It is uncertain if these represent access trackways downslope from the quarry, or quarried features, or both. No features shown in this position on Ordnance Survey 1890 1:10560 map (Sheet 59NW). However, there is a gravel pit and a sand pit to the north (see sites 329 and 330).
