Summary

A large stone under the hedge is probably the 'stone' recorded on historic and modern mapping. This is presumed to mark a boundary of some form. Another stone is marked on the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey map on the south side of the track some 100 metres to the south.

Kalnins, N., 08/05/2014, Stone On Broad Down (Ground Photograph). SDV356612.

Site visit 5th May 2014. Large stone visible at this location under the hedge, behind a tree.


Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

'Stone' marked, on south side of a field boundary adjacent to the row of 'Tumuli' on the north side of Broad Down.

The modern Ordnance Survey 1997 1:25000 map (Explorer map 30) depicts a stone immediately to the south of the south boundary of the survey area. The stone is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1889 1:2500 map. The stone, assumed to mark a boundary, was not seen during the field survey.
