Full description

Thomas Balle chest tomb about 8 metres north-west of the tower of the Church of St Thomas. Chest tomb. Mid 18th century. Freestone. Grand tall chest, rectangular on plan, with a moulded plinth, panelled sides, corner balusters and a moulded lid. Finely-carved armorial bearings in relief on the lid with an inscription in good lettering stating that the tomb commemorates Thomas Balle died 1749, and was erected by Thomas Hussey. The chest is surrounded by privet planting. Thomas Balle was the owner of Mamhead in the 18th cnetury and erected the obelisk. Other details: LBS No 85972.
