HER Number:MDV7342
Name:Barrow West of Hore Down Gate

Summary

One of several probable Bronze Age barrows at Hore Down Gate is visible as a pale soilmark on aerial photographs taken in 1992, and as an earthwork mound on aerial photographs between 1947 and 2000. The site is vulnerable to ploughing and the soilmark was probably caused by an episode of deeper ploughing.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A mound is visible as a pale soilmark, roughly 18 metres in diameter, on aerial photographs taken in May and October 1992. It is adjacent to the hedgebank and likely to be the Bronze Age barrow recorded as an earthwork by Grinsell in 1968. An earthwork mound is just visible on aerial photographs between 1947 and 2000. It is likely that the soilmark was created by the material of the mound being cut into and brought to the surface during an episode of deeper ploughing. It is likely that an earthwork survives in this location, although both above and below ground remains are vulnerable to destruction from continued agricultural activity.
