Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

A rectilinear shaped earthwork pit, circa 35m in length by 20m in width, is visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, off Shute Lane, Denbury and Torbryan. The earthwork is located within a land parcel shown as an orchard on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century and is interpreted as a possible post-medieval or 19th century extractive pit. The association of disused extractive pits which have been given over to the planting of orchards is a common theme which has been noted in other AI&M/NMP surveys across Devon. The pit possibly corresponds to one of the earthworks interpreted as ‘building platforms’ noted by Wessex Archaeology in this record.
