Hamel Down noted in 1566; Hamel=cut off, and signifies that the dun or hill has a broad flat top. Pre-Elizabethan.

A cairn 45' in diameter and 6' high. (comment Lady A. Fox, June 1950) Scheduled Ancient Monument. (TDA 1952, 240).
Russell refers to Hameldon Beacon as a fire beacon and shows it on his map as pre-Elizabethan. The only reference he quotes, however, is O.S. map of 1809. The place name 'Hamel Down' merely signifies a hill with a flat top (Russell, 1955, 302).

Apart from its suitable situation there is no visible evidence of its use as a beacon.
