Summary

Northern of two Prehistoric cairns on Hamel Down with a boundary stone in the centre. Measures 17.0m in diameter and 0.8m high; surveyed by the Ordnance Survey in 1960. Mutilation in the top and south face shows a construction of stones. No trace of ditch.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1953, SX77NW13 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV346385.

(06/11/1953) A heather and gorse covered mound at SX 7145 7866. It is 17.0 m. in diameter with a maximum height of 0.8 m. Mutilation in the top and south face shows a construction of stones. No trace of ditch. Probable B.A. cairn.
On top of the mound is a modern boundary stone inscribed "DS 1854 Old House".
(10/05/1960) A 25" survey has been made at SX 7145 7865.

Site visited on 21st July 1972. Cairn, hollow towards centre and dug into from south-east. Cairn is on Hamel Down with diameter 14.5 metres and height 0.9 metres.

Two cairns on the south-east extension of the ridge on Hamel Down. This northern cairn of 14.5 metres diameter by 0.8 metres high has been extensively damaged and has a stone inscribed 'Old house' set within a wide central hollow. The name probably refers to a shelter that once existed here constructed out of the cairn stones. Other details: Map 20, Site 14.
