Full description

Manning, P. T. + Reed, S. J., 2002, Archaeological Evaluation of the Proposed Graveyard Extension of St Michael and All Angels Parish Church, Stokenham (Report - Evaluation). SDV342120.

Two trenches were excavated in 2002 to the east of Stokenham parish church and several probably medieval features were exposed. A slate-lined feature interpreted as a possible grave and the foundations of a wall running east to west 0.8 metres wide were exposed in Trench 1. Walls revealed in Trench 2 were constructed of mud-bonded slate/shale slabs and the building was 5.2 metres wide and aligned north to south. Other details: Figures 19, 22.

Williams, H. + Turner, S., 2005, Stokenham: Archaeological Survey and Excavation in 2005, 23 (Report - Survey). SDV321702.

During the excavations in 2005 the slate-lined feature proved to be one of the two culverts 0.5 metres wide by 0.5 metres deep. It was suggested that culverts were associated with the farmyard of the medieval longhouse to the north.

Williams, H., 2007, Manor field, Stokenham, Devon. Interim report on the second fieldwork season, July 2006 (Report - Interim). SDV365435.

A second season of archaeological investigations was undertaken in Manor Field in July 2006, prior to the extension of the churchyard. They included the excavation of two trenches and two test pits. Trench 1 covered the entire area of the churchyard extension and included the re-excavation of the features revealed here during the initial fieldwork in 2005. These included the west-east culvert that was provisionally interpreted as a cist grave in 2002. The culvert, which was inserted into the fill of a ditch, was lined with large shillet slabs. At its western end was a similar, north-south aligned culvert that had been excavated in 2005. It is suggested that these are part of a drainage system for the medieval longhouse and yard.
