Dowland has also been referred to as 'Duuland' in 1266 and 'Duylond' in 1340.

Dowland was mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Duvelanda' when it belonged to Goscelm. In 1242 it was referred to as 'Dugheland', in 1291 as 'Doughelonde' and in 1428 as 'Doweland' and 'Dauland'.
