Full description

Medieval ridge and furrow lies in the bottom of the coombe, and is only visible when both the vegetation cover and light is low. It consists of a series of low (maximum 0.2 metres high) ridges spaced at a distance of circa 5 metres apart and aligned north to south. Most are straight, but some appear to curve westwards at their southern end. They stop short of the lynchets on either side, and in particularly favourable conditions can be seen to continue down the coombe, with an indistinct lynchet forming their western boundary. This area was possibly farmed as desmesne land for the lords of the manor of West Ogwell, and probably represents a temporary extension of this at a time of population pressure during the 12th and 13th centuries.
