Summary

Farmstead dates to at least the 16th or 17th century, based on the ages of the surviving farmhouse and barn/shippon. Depicted on the Tithe Map as East and West Nordon, the farm became known as Northdown from the late 19th century, called Norden Thatch on modern maps. Layout of the farm largely unchanged since the early 20th century.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

'Norden/Nordon' is depicted on the Tithe Map. At this time is divided into West and East Nordon. East Norden (324 on apportionment) consists of five buildings arranged around a courtyard; West Nordon (115 on apportionment) consists of a linear range of buildings, aligned north-west by south-east, bordering a yard directly to the west of East Nordon.

Called 'Northdown' by the late 19th century historic map depiction. Layout of the buildings appears unchanged from the Tithe Map depiction.

Northdown on the early 20th century historic map differs from the earlier depictions, as a large central building (possibly originally the farmhouse of East Nordon?) has been removed.
