Historic farmstead first mentioned as Lewendona in the Domesday Book (1086). Farmhouse is early-mid 16th century. Depicted on the Tithe Map; farm was developed through the later 19th century and into the early 20th century, with further modern development to the west.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments, Plot 716 (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Farm is shown on the Tithe Map; an L-shaped building at the south of the farmyard (house?) is joined to a T-shaped building to the north.

The late 19th century historic map shows some development to the north of the older buildings shown on the Tithe Map.

By the early 20th century historic map depiction, the farm layout has been further developed; the buildings added to the north of the farmhouse have been extended into a range built around three sides (north, west and south) of the farmyard. Further changes include a building adjacent to the road at the north of the site.

Lowton is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as 'Lewendona'. Later mentions include 'Lowedon Peverel' (1303), 'Lowedone Peverel' (1423), 'Lughedon' (1346) and 'Luedo(u)n' (1396, 1428).
