Local information suggests that this is the site of a dump of us army material in wwii (pidgeon).

HORNER + TURNER, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV311341.

Os 1st edition 25" map records sluices in this field. Also channel and sluices from the mill leat and river ashburn round s side of furseleigh mill. Current dcc digitised aps (1999) show channels running off central sluice/channel line. This has all the hallmarks of a watermeadow system. Possibly medieval given the proximity to buckfast abbey (horner + turner).

Marks on the grass and a slight shadow shown on the air photo. Appears to be a d-shaped enclosure, ditch and cultivation marks. These last are both inside and outside the enclosure, and seem to spread out from the central channel. Water cress plantation? (balkwill).

A network of linear earthwork banks, circa 2.5 metres wide, is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. They are arranged in a grid pattern either side of and perpendicular to a central channel that runs north-west to south-east, consistent with an interpretation as a medieval or post-medieval watermeadow. The channel is depicted, with sluices, on the late-19th century mapping. The conjoined earthworks cover more than a hectare, and some additional banks on the same alignment are visible to the south-east, and may be a continuation of the system. The D-shaped enclosure mentioned by Balkwill (recorded separately as MDV123389) appears to overlie the watermeadow and may have impacted on the south-eastern part.
