Summary

Historic farmstead with medieval origins. Documentary sources record the farm from the late 12th century onwards. It is depicted on the mid-19th century Tithe Map and appears to have been partly converted in modern times. Included in Dartmoor National Park Authority survey. Totally refurbished in 2012 when new owners took over, the farm currently (2018) operates as 'Cheston Farm Equestrian Centre'.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

'Cheston' is depicted on the Tithe Map (1842) with some of the same buildings as exist today. 2008 on the Ugborough apportionment.

The site of a medieval farmstead at Cheston, Ugborough. Author gives possible explanation of the origin of the name with its Roman connotations.

Cheston is recorded as 'Cherteston' from 1198 and 'Cheston' from 1679.

Farmstead included in survey. Visited on 25/09/1995. Farmhouse is thought to date to the early 17th century, the other farm buildings various from the 18th to 19th centuries.

'Cheston' farm is depicted on the modern mapping. Buildings to the west of the holding appear to have been converted and are marked as 'Little Cheston' (3 and 4).
