Full description

Berry, N., 2006, Archaeological and Historic Landscape Survey of Wembury Point and The Mewstone, Wembury, Devon, 22 (Report - Survey). SDV345992.

Terraced platform for buildings cut into south-east facing slope of the Mewstone. The platform is partly occupied by the circular Folly and later cottage, but extends for another 3-3.5 metres north-east of the cottage, and is about the same width. The north-east end is becoming eroded, and the south-west end fades out on the slope, but may have been more defined previously. The 1865 map does indicate a scarp uphill of the northern end of the terrace, which may indicate a larger area was landscaped, but this is no longer visible. Given the historical evidence of earlier occupation of the Mewstone, it is possible that the terrace may pre-date the current buildings. As most of the island is very steep and/or exposed, there are few areas that could be used for dwellings. Other details: Figure 22-23; site inventory 068; map.
