Summary

One of seven hut circles on south Yartor Down, around 450 meters north of the River Dart. Part of the Dartmeet parallel reave system, these huts are associated with fields and enclosures which have been overlaid by later boundaries. This hut is well-preserved and lies within a small enclosure and measures approximately 8.5 meters in diameter.

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1980, SX67SE49 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV347088.

The hut at SX67887261 (PRN79817) has double-faced orthostatic walling 2.0 meters thick and 0.6 meters high with an outer wall or annex on the south-west.


Butler, J., 1991, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume One - The East, 122 (Monograph). SDV299725.

One of two huts close together within a group of five irregularly shaped fields built onto the eastern side of a reave, the perimeters rebuilt surrounding a number of rabbit buries, two of them round, which are protected by a vermin trap. A passageway leads from the eastern edge towards the inner field, where a small enclosure surrounds the well-preserved uphill hut. This hut measures 8.0 meters in diameter and is joined by a small bank to its partner (PRN 79818). Other details: Map 13, 1.

Large hut circle on south Yartor Down, within the Dartmeet parallel reave system; this hut is located within a small enclosure in close proximity to another hut hit and enclosure, and several post medieval pillow mounds, part of Vag Hill rabbit warren.

Hut circle at SX67897261. This hut circle consists of very stony walls with elements of both internal and external wall facings surviving. Much of the stone is present although collapsed. This hut which is contained within a concentric enclosure, has a level interior and has no definable entrance. It has an internal diameter of 8.5 meters, with walls 2.0 meters thick and 0.5 meters high.
