Full description

Fisher, J., 1999, East Devon Conservation Area Appraisals: Whimple, 6 (Report - non-specific). SDV347093.

At Knowle Cross, near the road junction, are several 18th and early 19th century cob cottages with hipped thatched roofs. These are survivals of plain one or two room ground floor plans, probably former squatter cottages, as they immediately front the road with no land behind.

English Heritage, 2011, Historic Houses Register (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV346128.

Small cottage. Mid - late 19th century, modernised circa 1980. Plastered cob and stone rubble; stone rubble stack topped with 19th century brick; thatch roof. Plan: small two-room plan cottage facing north-east. The large left (south-east) room has a gable-end stack. Two storeys with circa 1980 single storey extension on the left end. Exterior: symmetrical two-window front of 20th century casements with glazing bars, the smaller first floor windows have thatch eyebrows over. Central doorway contains a 20th century two-flap door with contemporary shingle-roofed porch. Roof is hipped both ends. Interior: has plain carpentry detail where exposed. Saxons is one of an attractive group of small thatch-roofed cottages at Knowle Cross. It is the only cottage here which does not appear on the 1845 parish tithe map.
