Name:Cairn in Ausewell Woods, south-east of Ausewell Rocks

Summary

Western cairn of a pair south-east of Ausewell Rocks. Recorded by the Ordnance Survey in 1960. Measures 18m in diameter. This had a flat crest with a dry stone wall around the summit, only a small length of this now survives on the west side. The crude dry stone wall around the western cairn, obviously modern, survives as a semi-circular enclosure on the west side of the cairn's flat top.

Full description

Worth, R. H., 1922, 41st Report of the Barrow Committee, 69-70 fig. (Article in Serial). SDV231132.

Diameter 15.5m, height 2.1m. Siting slope. Cairn with top encircled in modern stone wall.

(24/03/1960) Western cairn: This had a flat crest with a dry stone wall around the summit, only a small length of this now survives on the west side.
Cairn diameter at base, 51' 6"; at top 28' 6"; and height 7ft.
(18/05/1960) The two cairns are as described above except that both have diameter of 18.0m.
The crude dry stone wall around the western cairn, obviously modern, survives as a semi-circular enclosure on the west side of the cairn's flat top.
A 25" survey has been made.
