Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Medieval to XIX - 1066 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The relict banks do not match any boundaries depicted in this precise location.

Royal Air Force, 1946 - 1949, Royal Air Force Aerial Photographs (Aerial Photograph). SDV342938.

Earthworks visible south of Budgells Farm, rectangular feature and smaller satelllite features nearby. The earthworks may possibly be associated with garden landscaping or structures.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 RS 2305-2306 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

Banks and ditches were visible as low and shallow earthworks and cropmarks. Map object based partly on this source.

GetMapping, 1999 - 2000, Millennium Map 1999-2000 Getmapping (Aerial Photograph). SDV321648.

Earthworks are ephemeral on these aerial photographs.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The relict earthworks are visible within an area probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Bluesky, 2006 - 2007, Bluesky aerial photographs 2006 - 2007 (Aerial Photograph). SDV341189.

Earthworks visible south of Budgells Farm, rectangular feature and smaller satelllite features nearby.

Next Perspectives, 2010, Aerial Photography for Great Britain (Aerial Photograph). SDV359490.

Banks and ditches were visible as low and shallow earthworks and cropmarks. Map object based partly on this source.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Low and shallow ditches and banks were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 as earthworks and cropmarks on the south-east facing slopes south of Budgells Farm, Luppitt parish.
It is likely that these are at least partly the same as those identified by the above authority, although it is unclear what the satellite features may have been. The field system in the immediate vicinity has been characterised as being probably of medieval origin. The relict earthworks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppit, and are therefore interpreted as probably the remains of former field boundaries of possible medieval date that had been cleared by the early 19th century.
