Summary

Ford. The river teign was fordable at low water before the deepening of channels for navigation. Its antiquity is uncertain but its existence is highly likely as evidenced by the two old lanes, hackney lane and buckland road which terminate on the southern bank and the existence of the passage house inn on the northern bank (unattributed).

'ancient ford (site of)' shown on os 25" (1880s) map from 'passage house inn' at sx87927229 on the northern shore of the 'river teign' to 'buckland gate' at sx88277208 on the southern shore (os).

Crossing place of river teign near hackney. According to william bennet, bishop of cloyne, this is where the british icknield way crossed the river (harris citing lysons).
